Teaching the celebrities and executives must have been the most fun part of the whole weekend, you get celebrities who have not driven a manual car before, and trying to drift with the car. The car that we were using was pretty easy to handle, it was a Z33 Fairlady with 350bhp at wheels. It was very easy for them to kick the backend out, but to “drift” was a different story, to hold a drift at a respectable oversteer angle and balancing it speed and line was key.
The funniest was one of the celeb (not mentioning names), she actually screamed when she let go of the clutch and the car hop off, it was quite huilarious for the guys outside, not so sure about the guy inside the car trying to teach her. Then so are not so good at listening to instructions, they just keep on doing the same mistake over and over. The guys are worst, some of the thinks that flooring the throttle and having the rev right up to the limiter looks good, sorry it doesn’t… Drifting is about finesse, not just burning tires pointlessly.
One that I have to mention is Michael Wong, 王敏德. Most people knows him for flying, the understanding of physics and mechanical stuff really help, he struggled at first on how to catch the backend swinging too fast out, but once he got the feeling he is very good at keeping the car drifting, he knows how to balance the momentum, drift angle and speed very well, actually the best for the day by far, I offer him the “Best Style Award”…
